Mellows by Magic Milk

Magic Milk are one of Chicago’s best live minimalist garage rock/psych bands that captivate audiences everywhere, and from the start to their last song they have the fans going  into a frenzy. Magic Milk consists of three key elements with Maggie on drums, Nick on bass, and fuckin’ Kenny on vocals/guitar.  So, here comes their Slow Fizz Records debut EP ‘Mellows’. Unlike their crazy ass live shows where Kenny drops his pants, ‘Mellows’ is a five song EP that captures Magic Milk in a mellow groove that will have you dancing, singing, and possibly stoned by the end of the last track.

The first track “Dolphins’n'Bullshit” is a solid garage rockin’ tune and fuckin’ hilarious. “Handsome Guy” is a nice rock n’ stroll song with some keyboard action that will have you grabbing a little smoke and taking it all in. “The Year 2000″ is a killer psych-rock-a-majestic that made me feel like I was trippin’ on a beach with Conan and LaBamba feeding me grapes and for some reason Kenny was there singing in his underwear…. again. “Drives Me Wild” has a hard-rockin’ wall of fuzz that swirls around you and willwhave you dancing all around your place knocking over shit. “So So Cool” for those of you who know Magic Milk‘s sound then you know this song is kick ass… and if it’s your first time… I’ll be gentle… this song is a rockin’ sing/dance-a-long track that has a killer bass groove from Nick that makes the girl’s panties drop.

All in all this EP is a nice stepping stone to getting into the ever-evolving kick ass sound of Magic Milk, however for the full effect… get out to one of their live shows!!!

Passenger Side by Wells-Next-The-Sea

Chicago’s Americana folksters Wells-Next-The-Sea just keeps refining their sound more and more with every release which is really prevalent on their latest release ‘Passenger Side’ which is set for release on April 24, 2012 on 12″ vinyl and download. Unlike past releases they have taken a different direction from the Indie Alt-Country/Rock sound they were known for and on ‘Passenger Side’  taken a more gentle and more folky sound with some straight-up down tempo sing-a-long  songs. Imagine if you took an Indie music heavyweight band like Luna and stripped down their sound and added more of a country/folk sound with a little banjo, ukulele, and violin to the mix. Dan Morr and Brennan Mackey have put together some really well crafted song-writing. and there is some really amazing delicate vocal harmonies between the boys and Liz Barnett on this EP which were very welcoming.  I am looking forward to more from this band in the future, and I believe I will giving this release a spin this evening as the day slows down and grab myself a smoke and a beer and head out on the porch to take in the setting sun.
