Ah December… Ah New Music!!
By Xtine • Dec 6th, 2008 • Category: OKR Articles, UncategorizedMy heart has been filled with delicious new bands (well new to me) this past month. In the midst of a Chicago winter lurking and falling upon us I found warmth in front of a computer screen weeding out the bad from the new.
I harbor a secret crush for The Chairs. I have no clue what they look like, but it doesn’t matter because it’s just not that kind of crush. Aside from the loveliness that is the Neutral Milk Hotel, they have a great track, “Polly” which I’ve played over and over and over just so I can learn the words and sing-a-long. Needless to say their new EP has been on heavy rotation in my heart and MP3.
Another favorite to hit my doorstep is Ketch Harbour Wolves. They’re a mesh of Leonard Cohen, Interpol and winter winds that seem so perfect at this time of year. I had a hard time picking just one song for this week’s show, but I think you’ll like what you hear.
Then there’s my love affair with the LA scene and more particularly Marvelous Toy . I just can’t get “The City Is a Washing Machine” out of my head, and honestly, I just don’t wanna! But don’t be fooled by this one little song on our show, their new EP, All Is Quiet surprises with each new track and doesn’t bask in the same sound over and over and over…
But a girl can’t live on sweet little indie pop all day long. Enter Times New Viking. My new favorite noise rock band. They remind me what would be the end result if All Girl Summer Fun Band, X-Ray Specs and Los Campesinos! had a threesome and begat a bastard child. In other words, fun as fuck and loud as hell.
And of course there’s so much more, Red Wire Black Wire, The Coral Sea, Happy Hollows, Death Set, etc.
